How to Turn Paint Splatters Into Cute Animal Doodles
Paint splatters are just the jumping-off point for this fun and whimsical tutorial! Using Liquid Watercolor, you’ll first cover your surface with interesting paint splatters by trying out several different splatter techniques. Then you’ll use your imagination and a Fineliner pen to turn those splatters into adorable animal doodles!
What You’ll Need
- Liquid Watercolors
- Watercolor Pad
- Fineliner Pens
- Cup
- Water
Tips
This project gets messy! Be sure to layer your watercolor paper over a large poster board, or, better yet, take it outside. For best results, choose a thick piece of watercolor paper and the biggest brush you can find.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1
In a cup, dilute your Liquid Watercolor with up to four-parts water to create a subtle, transparent wash. Load your brush up with paint and start your splatters. The bigger your brush, the bigger the splatter! Experiment with different techniques, such as:
- Flicking you loaded brush across the canvas with your wrist
- Holding your loaded brush over the canvas and firmly tapping with your fingers
- Holding your loaded brush over the canvas and firmly tapping against a hard object, such as a cup or squeegee
Step 2
While letting your paint thoroughly dry, take a step back and look at your splatters with the eyes of a kid looking at the clouds. What sort of shapes do you see? Do any resemble a creature or object? Let your imagination run wild!
Step 3
Once the paint is fully dry, begin your doodles! Use a Fineliner pen to fill in the details of the animals you see. Add features such as eyes, noses, beaks, and tails.
Step 4
Continue until all your interesting splatter shapes have been filled in. Enjoy your whimsical art!
